Summer is nearing an end, but here at CleverHiker we’re approaching one of our favorite times to get outside and explore. Fall brings cooler weather, fewer crowds and less bugs on the trail. It’s also one of the best times to get great gear on the cheap. One of REI’s best sales of the year, theLabor Day Sale is happening from August 26-September 5th and includes some of our favorite backpacking, hiking, and camping gear. In addition to deep discounts, REI members have access to some exclusive sale items and they’ll receive an extra 20% off one outlet item with coupon code: LABOR22.
Here’s the gear we’re most stoked on in this year’s sale. Hope you enjoy!
Big Agnes Tiger Wall Tents – 25% Off
Big Agnes’ Tiger Wall UL2 & UL3 tents deliver a lot of interior space in an ultralight package. The Tiger Wall is a combination of two popular BA tents, with a shape that’s similar to the Copper Spur, but much lighter, and a pole structure that’s similar to the Fly Creek, but with more interior space. Its semi-freestanding design requires you tostake out the foot of the tent for a full pitch. That said, for a few small drawbacks, the Tiger Wall has a lot to love for ultralight backpackers and is on our Best Backpacking Tents list
The REI Quarter Dome SL 2 & SL 1 are great options for lightweight backpackers on a budget, as they’re among the most affordable options in the ultralight tent world. Despite being so light, the Quarter Dome SL offers a good amount of living space inside and large vestibules outside for storage. Learn more about these tents on our list of the Best Backpacking Tents.
All NEMO Tents – 25% Off
We love NEMO tents because the quality of construction and the dialed-in details make them an excellent value. Two of our favorites from our Best Backpacking Tents guide are the Hornet 2P and the Dagger 2P. If you’re a solo hiker looking to go as light as possible without sacrificing livability, you may love the Hornet 2. If you need extra space for you and a hiking partner, go with the roomy and lightweight Dagger 2.
It’s no secret that we love the NeoAir line of sleeping pads from Therm-a-Rest. You can usually find us snoozing on the Uberlite for summer adventures, the XLite for 3-season trips, and the XTherm for winter excursions. Head over to our Best Sleeping Pads guide to learn more about each of these pads.
The Osprey Exos 48 (men’s) and Eja 48 (women’s) have a sturdier frame than most lightweight packs, carry heavier loads comfortably, offer great back ventilation, and won’t break the bank either. If you need more space, these backpacks are also offered in Exos 58 and Eja 58 models. The Exos and Eja are featured on our Best Backpacking Backpacks list.
All Jetboil Stoves & Accessories -25% Off
If you mostly need a stove for boiling water for rehydrating freeze-dried meals, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option than the Jetboil Flash. When it comes to boiling water quickly, the Flash lives up to its name and costs less than some of Jetboil’s other systems. Though this stove lacks simmer control, this isn’t a deal breaker for most. The Flash is a top choice on our Best Backpacking Stove List.
MSR Pocket Rocket Stoves & Systems – 25% off
We’re big fans of MSR stoves, and the PocketRocket 2 has been atop pick on our Best Backpacking Stoves list for years. This stove is lightweight, compact, durable, and it has great simmer control. The upgraded MSR Pocket Rocket Deluxe has some extra features, like a push button ignitor andbetter performance in bad weather. Both are truly excellent backcountry stoves that come in handy kit versions as well: Pocket Rocket 2 Stove Kit & Pocket Rocket Deluxe Stove Kit.
MSR Windburner Stove – 25% Off
We love canister stove systems because they’re easy to use, great in windy conditions, and efficient. This stove type works best for folks who typically only need to heat water for coffee and backpacking meals, but you do still have some control over the strength of the flame for cooking with the Windburner. You can find more info about the Windburner on our Best Backpacking Stoves list.
The REI Siesta Hooded 25 is one of our favorite sleeping bags for frontcountry camping because it’s comfortable, durable, and comes in at a great value price. The unique, rectangular hood adds extra warmth on chilly nights, and it holds a full-size bed pillow securely in place. This bag is also available in a Double version for couples. Learn more about the Siesta bag on our Best Camping Sleeping Bags guide.
NEMO makes some of our favorite sleep gear for the backcountry. If you’re looking for a sleeping bag that’s comfy and spacious, the NEMO Disco 15 (men’s / women’s) from our Best Sleeping Bags list are great options. Pair that with one of our long-time favorite sleeping pads, the NEMO Tensor, and then complete your sleep system with the Nemo Fillo from our Best Pillows list and you’ll have a pretty luxurious setup.
All Exped Sleeping Pads – 25% Off

REI Camp X Chair – 50% Off
The REI Camp X from our Best Camping Chairs list is a simple, affordable chair that’s great for sitting around a campfire, at the beach, or just about anywhere. It’s made of a highly-breathable mesh with supportive webbing straps, which means it’ll help keep you cooler and more comfortable on hot days, and it dries quickly if it gets wet in the rain. The Camp Xtra Chair is an upgraded version with a storage pocket, a larger seat, and the lack of mesh makes it a bit warmer.
Exped Megasleep 25/40 – 25% Off
The Exped MegaSleep 25/40 (single / double) is great for those who want one space-saving sleeping bag that can adapt to different temperatures and conditions. Use the bag with the dark blue side on the top to keep you warm in temperatures down to freezing, or flip it over and have the less insulated light blue side up for warm summer nights. The Megasleep bag is one of our top sleeping bag picks for car camping
REI 650 Down Jacket – 30% Off
The REI 650 Down Jacket 2.0 (men’s / women’s) is a great option for lightweight adventurers on a budget. It’s made with lower-fill-power down, which means it’s not quite as technical and efficient as more expensive jackets, but we’re pretty happy with its performance for the price. The 650 Down is our favorite budget-friendly ultralight jacket on our Best Down Jackets list.
Rain gear is an absolute must for comfort and warmth, and all REI brand rain jackets and pants are on deep discount right now. Our favorites for backpacking are the already budget-friendly Rainier Jacket (men’s / women’s) and Pants (men’s / women’s). All KEEN Footwear – 20% Off

For day hikes, we like the Targhee III Mid WP (men’s / women’s) if you need ankle support and the Targhee III Low WP (men’s / women’s) if you’re looking for something a little lighter. Check them out on our lists of the Best Hiking Boots for Men / Women and Best Hiking Shoes for Men / Women.

All La Sportiva Footwear is on sale, but our favorite models are the Bushido and the Nucleo High. The La Sportiva Bushido trail running shoes (men’s / women’s) have awesome traction and feel very stable on rough terrain. The Nucleo High Boots (men’s / women’s) are super comfy, and they’re exceptionally lightweight for how rugged they are. Both models rank pretty high on our Best Trail Running Shoes for Men / Women and Best Hiking Boots for Men / Women.
All Darn Tough Socks – 25% Off
Darn Tough offers some of our favorite socks on the market, including the top picks on our Best Hiking Socks list – the Micro Crew Cushion (men’s / women’s) and Micro Crew Light Cushion (men’s / women’s). They’re super comfortable and highly functional, but perhaps their greatest asset is their unconditional lifetime guarantee with no strings attached. If you wear them out, you get a new pair, and that’s rad.
All Injinji Socks – 25% Off
Who doesn’t love a good toe sock? Injinji’s Run Lightweight socks are some of the most popular toe socks on the market because they’re highly-breathable and excellent for reducing friction between the toes. The Doublenest, along with a few other models from ENO, made our Best Hammocks list. We also highly recommend giving the luxurious, but spendy ENO Lounger a look while it’s available at such a great discount.
Ursack Food Bags – 30% Off
Ursacks are much less bulky and far lighter than any bear canister and they’re a lot easier/faster than any bear bagging method. The kevlar fabric on the ursack is strong enough to keep critters out of your food. Mice will quickly chew through expensive backpacking gear to get into food, so we almost always travel with an Ursack in the backcountry. We’re partial to the Ursack Major for the best balance of protection and weight.
All Black Diamond Trekking Poles – 25% Off
If you haven’t jumped on the trekking pole hype train yet, check out our Pros and Cons of Hiking with Trekking Poles post to see why we like them. We like poles with cork handles because they help keep clammy hiker hands from developing blisters. Black Diamond’s Alpine Carbon Cork and Trail Ergo Cork trekking poles are two of our favorites and they can both be found on our Best Trekking Poles list.
REI Packaway Coolers – 25% Off
The REI Packaway 24 Soft Cooler is our go-to cooler bag for lunches, day trips, potlucks, and everything in between. It converts from a tote to a cube-style bag with the click of two buckles, and it folds flat when not in use to save space. Because the Packaway Cooler is so affordable and versatile, we own it in multiple sizes and love them all. We also named it the best soft cooler on our Best Coolers list.
The REI Trail Packs – offered in both 40L (men’s / women’s) and 25L (men’s / women’s) – are affordable and compact daypack options. This reservoir comes in a variety of sizes, but we think the 2L model is usually plenty of water capacity and it fits most daypacks comfortably. Learn more about the Crux on our Best Hydration Bladders list.
