Bottom Line
KEEN is a beloved brand, so we had high expectations for the Whisper Sandal – which ranked in the middle of the pack of the camp shoes we recommend. After field-testing it, we’d happily wear the KEEN Whisper for water-based activities and may even consider it for longer hiking or backpacking trips. However, our gear analyst had issues with rubbing and hot spots.
We loved the smart features like the cinch at the top, which helps adjust the size and fit – even the webbing at the heel. We are also endeared to the eco-conscious mission of the company, which prioritizes materials and processes that won’t harm the environment. All-in-all, we believe this to be a quality sandal that can tackle almost anything.
How We Tested
We tested this shoe in the field by taking it on a 1.5-mile walk on grass, gravel, pavement, and water and a 4.3-mile walk along pavement, mud, gravel, and a dry riverbed. At the office, we tested this shoe for its support and analyzed the materials to assess durability.

COMFORT
When we initially put them on, the KEEN Whisper sandals fit through the soles and toes, but our heels felt close to the edge of the shoes. Over the course of our walking tests and adjusting the cinched closure, the shoe felt more comfortable, and we soon forgot about the heel.
The cinch is a nice detail to adjust the sandal’s fit. These sandals are easier to put on than a trail runner or lace-up shoe but not as quick as some of our other favorite camp shoes.
We did have some pause on our longer, 4-plus-mile walk. The material at the ankle opening hugs right up on the bottom of the ankle bone. We noticed the material at the ankle opening hugging our ankle bone, which led to rubbing and pinkish skin but no broken skin or blisters. Another issue was a hot spot that formed under our toes on a fast walk, which left our toes feeling sensitive for the rest of the day.

VERSATILITY
KEEN bills the Whisper sandal as a multi-talented water shoe, ready to tackle great outdoor adventures. We found the traction appropriate for both land and water. However, the sandal’s drying time limited its versatility. It features synthetic webbed uppers which took more time to dry than the OOfos OOriginals. During hot days, this probably doesn’t matter, but on a 65-degree day, our feet felt wet for more than 20 minutes after walking through water.
Their weight also limits their appropriateness for backpacking. The Whispers weigh 9.9 oz per sandal – heavier than the KEEN Hyperport H2 Sandal and the second-heaviest option in our camp shoes guide. We still might take these on backpacking trips that require frequent water crossings, but their weight might deter some backpackers.

SUPPORT
We conducted support tests at home using the bend, twist, squeeze method. During the bend test, the toe box compressed completely but the midsole stayed firm and tough through the pressure. The soles also resisted twisting, and the heel didn’t budge when squeezed. Overall, these tests concluded that this shoe offers good support and stability – but not as much as the KEEN Hyperport H2 sandal.
We tested this shoe in the field after a big workout that left our joints and our bodies sore. Walking in the Whispers, we immediately felt our bad knees and ankles. By the end of a 4.3-mile walk on flat ground, our knee felt swollen. The sole is not completely flat, but it didn’t support our arch as much as we wanted. The Whisper wasn’t as restorative as the recovery slides we tested and reviewed – the HOKA Ora and OOfos OOriginals.

DURABILITY
We found no faults in the durability of these shoes. As we examined the materials, we found the polyester webbing and stitching seemed solid, even after nearly 6 miles of hard trail use. However, user reviews site issues with the heel straps coming loose or ripping after only a couple of wears.
KEEN offers a 1 year warranty on their shoes if they’re purchased from an authorized dealer and the complaints are not of normal wear and tear, accident, neglect, or improper use. We don’t love that KEEN’s warranty excludes the bungee lacing system and insoles.

Should You Buy the KEEN Whisper Sandal?
The KEEN Whisper is made for more intense activities than some of our other favorite camp shoes. Its comfort, support, and traction make it easy to walk good distances – though be prepared for some rubbing – and its design makes water crossings and days at the beach a breeze. These are not the easy-going, slip-on shoes you’re looking for to run to the bathroom at 2am from your tent. It works best in summer, so those looking for a three-season shoe should look elsewhere. These sandals are a great value, however, for someone who is looking for a camp shoe that’s capable of more than simply walking and working around the campsite.

KEEN Hyperport H2 Sandal Review: The cousin of the KEEN Whisper. This model we found to be more cushy, supportive, and comfortable.
Bedrock Mountain Clog Review: This clog is another do-it-all shoe that we believe works better for three-season use. The only drawback is that this doesn’t travel through water like the KEEN.
Merrell Hydro Moc Review: If the Crocs Classic Clogs and KEEN Whisper had a baby, the Hydro Moc would be it. It has the light, rubbery upper of the Croc but the support and foot security of the KEEN.
