Bottom Line

The Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress is the best camping mattress we’ve found when “car camping” actually means sleeping in your vehicle – not on the ground. It’s a high-end camping mattress that’s custom-fit for popular SUVs, trucks, and vans. After a year of testing, we ranked it high on our list of the best camping mattresses because it slays this specific niche.

In just a few minutes – and with help from the included 12V pump – the Luno AIR Pro turned our vehicles into cozy bedrooms alongside trailheads, rivers, and forest service roads. This 4-inch inflatable mattress is comfortable and durable. And it truly did trace the contours of our Foresters, RAV4s, and trucks for a tailored fit.

Thanks to the Luno AIR Pro, we savored several nights of solid sleep in our vehicles. But it’s not totally perfect, and there are a couple of things to consider. Its 1.5 R-value is on the lower side and limits car campers to warm-weather adventures. Plus, there’s one downside to its custom fit: limited storage space for the rest of your camping gear (especially in smaller SUVs).

Still, the Luno crushed it overall. The AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress makes it supremely easy to sleep comfortably without a tent – or pull into a trailhead parking lot at sunset and hit the trail at sunrise without setting up and tearing down camp.

How We Tested

With temperatures ranging from the 20s to 90s Fahrenheit, we slept multiple nights on the Luno AIR Pro Mattress in all four seasons. We tested this mattress on spring camping trips, summer summit bids, fall day hikes, and winter trout-fishing outings.

Our tests primarily took place in the American Southwest, in New Mexico and Arizona, near places like the Taos ski area, Ski Santa Fe ski area, Navajo Dam, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, White Sands National Park, and the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque.

Comfort

The Luno AIR Pro truly transforms vehicles into cozy sleeping spaces. Paired with our Luno Packable Pillow, the AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress slept us comfortably as we camped in a Subaru Forester outside Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque. It’s heaps cozier than sleeping on car seats – and most camping mattresses, too.

The mattress itself swells to 4 inches thick when fully inflated. Under the hood, there’s plenty of structure (circular coils) to provide even support from head to toe. It’s impressively sturdy, with plenty of heft to support our broad-shouldered gear analyst.

Touch valves on the sides make it easy to let out air until you find the right balance between softness and support for your body. If your partner – or pupper – likes a firmer or softer mattress than you, don’t worry. The Luno AIR Pro is two-sided, allowing you to enjoy a personalized inflation level on each side.

Luno also offers several optional comfort accessories. We splurged on the Luno Fitted Mattress Sheet to take the edge off the AIR Vehicle Mattress’s highly durable face fabric. For a totally tricked-out vehicle, you can add a Camping Fan, Privacy Curtain, Window Screens, and other creature comforts.

With the Luno AIR Pro, camping in your car can be surprisingly comfortable.

Ease of Use

Believe it or not, the Luno AIR Pro is easier to use than a self-inflating camping mattress – even though it’s much more high-tech.

The Luno AIR Pro inflates in only 2 minutes with the included 12V Pump (which conveniently plugs into your vehicle’s lighter port). We found the electric system worked quicker and easier than some other self-inflating camping mattresses, which can be finicky and often take longer to inflate.

This mattress has Head Support Bridge attachments, which provide a level sleeping platform for your head while freeing up food and gear storage under the mattress behind the front seats, where the inflatable supports used to be.

We did have a couple of hiccups with the adjustment valves. They’re reliable but located on the sides of the mattress. This is convenient at night if you need to reach over to fine-tune the inflation level, but they’re flush with the back doors, too. We snagged the valves a couple of times when getting in and out of our Subaru, which unfortunately emptied the air mattress. Overall, though, the Luno AIR Pro is low-maintenance.

Warmth

We learned the hard way that the Luno AIR Pro is not a four-season vehicle mattress. Our backs felt frosty when the temperatures dipped into the 20s and 30s while camping at high elevations in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. When we got home, we checked this mattress’s R-value: 1.5.

An R-value of 1.5 is great for summer temps, but you’ll lose a lot of body heat when the temperatures dip below the 50s. During our field tests, we felt chilly when overnight lows dropped into the 40s. We scrambled for our down jackets when the temperatures dipped into the 20s at the Taos Ski Area and 30s at the Ski Santa Fe ski Area.

To be clear, camping mattresses with high R-values don’t add warmth – they limit how much body heat you lose to the cold ground underneath you. Even in a vehicle, you’ll lose body heat to the cold air underneath your truck or SUV.

With its low R-value, the Luno AIR Pro is great for warm weather, not cold-weather car camping. If you do four-season car camping, the Luno AIR+FOAM Pro adds a layer of polyurethane foam for a comfort upgrade and R-value boost (11) for winter-grade warmth.

Packed Size

The Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress rolls up easily into a convenient carrying case that’s about the size of a folding camp chair or six-person campground tent. Its packed weight is 13 pounds, with packed dimensions of an 8-inch diameter and 26-inch length. This is an undeniably heavy camping mattress – thanks to premium support and highly durable materials – but it’s still convenient to store, pack, and carry.

Overall, the Luno AIR Pro is one of our bulkier pieces of gear. It’s not as small as our regular camping mattresses. But its shape is more convenient to pack and carry than some of the luxury camping mattresses that stow more like sleeping bags and oversized beach bags.

We fit our Luno AIR Pro on several shelves in our garage and in the protected hatchback of our Subaru Forester. We also appreciate a recent update that includes convenient pouches, which make the included pump and repair kit easy to pack and find. Since the Luno AIR Pro is a vehicle-sized, luxury mattress, we have no complaints about its packed size.

Should You Buy the Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress?

The Luno AIR Pro Vehicle Mattress may be a niche mattress, but it’s fantastic for those who camp mostly in their vehicles. We love pulling into a campsite and having a home-quality mattress inflated in 2 minutes. For us, this vehicle mattress is a great buy if you’d rather crash in your car than on the ground – whether that’s to protect yourself from bad weather and wild animals, to save on campground and hotel fees, or to get an early start for a summit sunrise, morning hatch, or monsoon-season day hike.

The Luno AIR Pro can’t handle wintry temperatures. But that’s our only complaint about this custom-fit vehicle mattress after a year of personal use. Obviously, camping in a vehicle isn’t for everybody. But if that’s your jam, the Luno AIR Pro is your dream camping mattress.
