Bottom Line
The Arc’teryx Gamma Pants are a top-of-the-line adventure pant and a longtime CleverHiker favorite. Loaded with features, including cinch hems, a built-in belt, and all-zippered pockets, the Gamma Pants are fit for big adventures where durability and weather resistance (compared to other top hiking pants) are paramount. One of the more weather-resistant and durable pants we have tested, these are crafted with thicker material that sheds moderate precipitation and protects legs from brush and abrasions.
These premium pants come at a premium price tag and as such may not be everyone’s first pick off the rack. That being said, the Gamma Pants are an investment in one of the highest-performing pairs on the market. Tested in the rain of Alaska’s temperate rainforests and the backcountry of the Chugach Mountains, the Gammas are a top-notch pant for cooler weather and big mountain adventure.

Comfort & Mobility
With an athletic, yet slightly relaxed cut, the Arc’teryx Gamma Pants are sure to keep you comfortable outside for hours at a time. Their 4-way stretch material and gusseted crotch allow restriction-free maneuvering. We particularly enjoyed these pants moving through challenging, off-trail terrain where a flexible, yet durable pant was needed.
One of the heavier pants we have tested, the Gammas retain heat at a higher degree than most others. A slightly heavier material allows for warmth, weather resistance, and durability. That being said, these pants are likely not the best choice for hot and dry climates as they retain more body heat for a warmer feel.
Breathability
The Arc’teryx Gammas achieve the lofty standard of warmth and breathability without feeling damp or clammy. The heavier material of these pants retains a higher level of body heat than others we tested but without accumulating excess moisture.
Due to their thicker material, the Gammas may not be the best option for activities in the heat of summer. They excel in cooler climates or for use in summer when crossing snowfields, glaciers and other alpine environments where durability is more important than breathability.
Weather Resistance
While testing these pants in drizzly and misty conditions in Alaska’s temperate rainforest, we were impressed with their high degree of weather resistance. They held up remarkably well in damp and windy conditions keeping us warm and dry. We found that the Gammas held up well for short periods of exposure to moderate amounts of precipitation. Among the more weather resistant of the pants we tested, the Gammas resisted wetting out the longest.
If embarking on an adventure where you might be encountering rain and colder temps, the Gamma Pants are the perfect choice. While they may not be the best pants for hot days due to their thicker material, they are right at home in cooler climates where light precipitation is a strong possibility.
Durability
During our testing, we were struck by the durability of the Gammas. They easily took hard scrapes and forays through thick brush in stride showing no visible signs of wear. While there are no areas of extra reinforcement (around the knees or seat for example) the high-quality material is more than adequate to withstand heavy use.
The cuffs are strong and stand up to the regular abrasion that comes with every step along wet and gritty trails. With an added laminated seam over the hemline on the cuff, we are impressed by the level of detail given to these pants and their commitment to a highly durable product.
Features
The Gammas come loaded with features sure to impress any seasoned hiker looking for a well-thought-out pair of pants. With an integrated belt, there’s no need for an external one that gets in the way of a backpack hip belt.
Three zippered pockets (two front and one thigh) seamlessly blend into the pants and keep stowed items secure. The thigh pocket is also perfectly designed to fit around the leg loop of a climbing harness so that you can still access items while wearing a harness. While these pants lack back pockets, we found the volume of the three existing ones to be more than adequate for most items.
The cuffs come equipped with a cinching system for protection against weather, scrapes, or insects. We found this feature especially useful for dialing in the fit and slimming down the lower leg profile of the pants. Also equipped with eyelets for attaching gaiters or cord to keep the cuffs in place, the Arc’teryx Gammas come loaded with features for backcountry adventure.
Should You Buy the Arc’teryx Gamma Pants?
The Arc’teryx Gamma Pants are the perfect choice for hikers in cooler weather in need of slightly heavier and more durable pants. This pair excels in cooler temperatures and has excellent weather resistance and durability. Although they come at a high price, the Arc’teryx Gamma Pants are a worthwhile addition to any hiker’s closet for a rugged, dependable, and premium quality piece of gear.
