The ideal rain boot depends on the activity, so we put ‘em on from damp to soggy to soaked conditions.
While style is often a priority, functionality is key when choosing a rain boot. To truly evaluate performance, we wore these boots in real-world settings, walking and splashing through all kinds of weather in Idaho. Its unpredictable climate provided the perfect testing grounds, with rain, snow, and mud testing each pair.
Every boot was worn for at least 20 hours and covered three miles of hiking. We also assessed fit with different socks, ease of cleaning, and how simple it was to put on and take off each boot. Our hands-on approach ensured a thorough evaluation of every pair.
WATER RESISTANCE
Water resistance is a top metric for obvious reasons in a rainboot. All the boots on our list are made from waterproof materials, but they have different designs and heights, which impact how well they hold up to the elements.
Taller boots typically scored higher, as they offer more protection. Boot height and flood height can differ – some of the wellies on our list are designed with laces, zippers, cut-outs, or elastic goring, which ease getting on and off but reduce the flood height and waterproofing.
Calf circumference also plays a role in keeping water out, as wider-fitting boots offer more chances to soak your socks.
The final piece in weatherproofing is the design of the boot. We inspected the seams’ construction, the materials used, and noted any features that could compromise waterproofing.
COMFORT
Comfort can vary from person to person, so we focused on design features that ensure the boots remain wearable for extended periods. After all, a boot that isn’t comfortable isn’t functional.
