Bottom Line

The Altra Experience Wild 3+ is an affordable trail shoe that blends a minimal 4mm drop with maximum cushioning. Our testers took it on excursions from a section hike on the Appalachian Trail to training runs in Virginia and Michigan.

No matter the terrain—dirt roads, gravel paths, and rocky trails—we found it to be exceptionally comfortable and high performing. This was thanks in part to the Vibram outsole on this update, which replaced the less grippy outsole on previous iterations.

The ample cushioning kept our feet feeling fresh even on long outings, and while we liked the snug fit around the heel and midfoot, those with higher volume feet might find it slightly too tight. Aside from that, this update delivers versatility and comfort at a competitive price, making it an excellent option for a wide range of runners. See how it stacks against the rest of our favorites on our guide to the best women’s trail running shoes.

How We Tested

During our two months of testing, we put the Altra Experience Wild 3+ through its paces on compacted surfaces ranging from gravel paths and dirt roads to the rugged singletrack of the Appalachian Trail. We ran in mild, mostly dry conditions on packed dirt roads while doing recovery runs in the midwestern spring. Our testers also ran longer training runs along the Virginia Creeper Trail in the heat and humidity of the southern mid-Atlantic summer.

In addition to running miles, we logged backpacking miles in the Experience Wild 3+, hiking the iconic Appalachian Trail in Tennessee. The trail itself was highly varied, covering everything from relatively smooth single track to pine-laden trail to rocky tread. Conditions during that trip ranged from sweltering to cold and rainy and everything in between.

Traction

The Altra Experience Wild 3+ features a Vibram outsole and deep lugs for excellent traction across various terrain types. The switch from MaxTrac to Vibram is a game-changer for these shoes and rectifies the reduced-grip issue we experienced on wet surfaces with the 2. We tested these shoes on everything from compact dirt and gravel to muddy trails and rocky singletrack. Overall, we are quite impressed with their consistent performance.
The Experience Wild 3+ performs well on moderate terrain and loses some traction in very muddy conditions, but this isn’t a dealbreaker. In fact, the slightly less aggressive lugs make it a versatile trail runner, especially if your routes include paved or gravel surfaces, since it doesn’t “catch” on smoother surfaces like more aggressive tread might.

Comfort

The comfort category truly distinguishes the Altra Experience Wild 3+ from similar models, and we find it to be one of the most comfortable pairs of shoes we tested this year. The thick cushioning underfoot provides plush comfort without being overly high. Additionally, Altra added a minimal heel-to-toe drop (4mm) to this model, making it more comfortable for a wider range of wearers compared to their classic zero-drop platform.

The midfoot fits more snugly than other similar models, including the previous version, offering a secure fit that is never sloppy while still allowing plenty of room for toes to spread out.

Most runners will find the regular width more than sufficient, as it’s already wider than a typical women’s shoe, which is beneficial since the Experience Wild 3+ is not available in a wide width like other Altra trail runners. Our testers also appreciated the snug heel, updated heel collar, and extra-cushioned tongue that enhances overall comfort.

Weight

The weight of the Altra Experience Wild 3+ is fairly average among the trail runners we tested. This is impressive given the thickness of the midsole and the spaciousness of the toe box.

The new Altra EGO™ P35 foam gives max cushion without a weight penalty, keeping your feet fresh even on long days. Even after an all-day excursion on the Appalachian Trail, we hardly noticed we were wearing shoes at all.

Durability

While the super-lightweight materials help keep your feet from getting fatigued during long efforts, they can also be vulnerable to damage from trail debris and rocky terrain. The Experience Wild 3+ upper has overlays for reinforcement and a sturdy toe rand to address this issue.

We found these features perfect for the rugged terrain of the Appalachian Trail, but we were slightly skeptical that the overlays alone would be sufficient. Blowouts around the upper/midsole attachment point have been a common problem with Altra shoes over the years. However, even after dozens of challenging miles, the Experience Wild 3+ shows no signs of wear in that area.

Breathability

The Experience Wild 3+ is a highly breathable trail runner that kept our feet cool and ventilated on sweltering days in a June heatwave. Even when wearing them with thicker wool socks when backpacking, our feet never feel swampy.

The mesh upper allowed moisture to wick away while moving and helps disperse heat build-up easily. Although this might reduce durability, we find it to be a worthwhile trade-off for intense workouts in the heat–especially on less demanding terrain where snags aren’t a concern. If you often run in hot, humid conditions, this shoe has you covered.

Responsiveness

We find the rocker-style platform of the Experience Wild 3+ genuinely helps us pick up the pace on flatter sections of trail runs. The lightweight foam is never cumbersome underfoot, and we feel surprisingly agile in such a well-cushioned shoe, even on rocky terrain.

The high level of cushioning protects our feet without compromising our connection to the ground. We feel nimble even on roots and stable despite the stack height.

Our only real complaint is that the shoe is designed for smooth, fast movements and can be a bit harder to maneuver when you need to slow down on very technical terrain. This also made it a tad clunky when backpacking. However, having a shoe built for speed is never really an issue, and the Experience Wild 3+ will definitely give you a boost.

Should You Buy the Altra Experience Wild 3+?

Runners looking for a smooth, fast ride on mild to moderate trails will find the Altra Experience Wild 3+ to be a top performer. The shoe provides ample room in the toe box paired with a more secure midfoot, which some may find slightly snug.

However, the average runner will see these as the Goldilocks of fit—not too wide, not too narrow in the right spots. The high cushioning, rocker-style platform, and minimal 4mm drop all help increase your pace and reduce fatigue.

Plus, the highly breathable mesh upper makes this a great trainer for hot weather. Its lower-than-average price adds to its value as an all-arounder. However, those seeking an extra-wide fit, more volume in the midfoot, or running on highly technical trails may want to look elsewhere.
