Bottom Line

Combining elements from sneakers, sandals, and water shoes, the KEEN Whisper provides full-coverage protection and reliable stability in wet environments. Made with a water-resistant upper that covers the entire foot, the Whisper effectively shields against scrapes and scratches on the trail. A thick rubber toe bumper minimizes the risk of stubbed toes.

The textured outsole doesn’t have traditional lugs, but the horizontal divots offer good bite – especially on smooth and slick surfaces. The cushioned footbed provides a stable platform for navigating slippery terrain. The biggest downsides to the outsole design is that the sandals fare worse on steeper grades, and they lack the long-term durability of KEEN’s own Newport H2 (which features actual lugs).

For easy to moderate hikes, particularly those near the water, the Whisper is a comfortable and stable choice with the added benefit of closed-toe protection. If you’re turned off by the style or outsole design, check out the other options in our women’s hiking sandals gear guide.

How We Tested

A lifelong paddler, gear analyst Marion Tucker knows what makes a practical water shoe. She put the KEEN Whisper sandals to the test for several months in eastern California, where they proved to be an excellent companion for water-based adventures. Metrics like comfort, stability, traction, and durability guided Marion’s assessment of performance in the field.

Comfort

For comfort on the trail – especially when adventures take you in or through water – the KEEN Whisper provides a good fit and solid protection. A nice middle ground between a sandal and a sneaker, the Whispers’ closed-toe upper fully cradles the foot. The textured footbed is soft with a plush springiness to it, minimizing fatigue on high-mileage days.

The footbed is also contoured, with a slightly cupped heel and moderate arch support that promote a more structured feel. Our tester has high arches and found the Whispers less aggressively molded than the Chaco Z/1 Classic. This made them less ideal for her, but those with average arches may find it to be a nice balance.

The rubber toe bumper was an excellent barrier against stubbed toes, and the crisscrossing upper kept out loose pebbles and warded off scratchy underbrush. We particularly appreciated the enclosed design when wading on fly-fishing trips. We were able to fully trust the shoes to seal out debris lurking in rushing creekbeds.

The Whisper features larger gaps in the upper than the similarly built KEEN Newport H2, which translates to better airflow. However, hiking through hot desert conditions, we still found our feet grew sweatier than in open-toed sandals.

In terms of fit, the KEEN Whisper runs on the narrower side. The toe box was somewhat restrictive for us, causing our pinky toes to rub against the toe cap and chafe. The wrapping around the ankle also hit just under our ankle bone, causing some discomfort. These may not be issues for everyone, but the slimmer profile of the Whisper definitely favors those with narrower feet.

Stability

The closed-toe Whispers offer great all-around stability. The enclosed upper kept our foot in place, and the bungee lace allowed for a snug fit. While hiking in the Whispers, our feet felt secure and free from any side-to-side wobble. The ankle strap is particularly supportive, with a wider design that offers great coverage and a locked-in feel.

The sole of the sandal is sturdy and doesn’t have much bend or flex. This rigidity diminishes ground feel but is useful for those who need the structured support. We found it especially helpful when hiking over rougher terrain. The thick sole not only provides a stable platform when traversing uneven surfaces but also serves as a comfortable buffer between your foot and protruding obstacles like rocks or roots.

Traction

The Whisper shines in its ability to provide secure footing in wet conditions. Unlike many hiking sandals, the Whisper doesn’t have true lugs, instead featuring a textured outsole with horizontal divots that help grip slippery surfaces. When hiking creekside or wading in the Whispers, the sandals easily grabbed onto the ground and kept us moving steadily and securely.

Though they excel in the water, the Whispers do not inspire confidence on all surfaces. We experienced more foot slips on steeper grades and when hiking over loose gravel. They’re a better option for easy to moderate hikes on firmer, level ground.

Durability

The KEEN Whisper is a sturdy option that excels in the right conditions. The webbing-based upper is constructed as a single piece and features reinforced stitching to better resist wear and tear. The upper itself is decently strong, withstand scrapes against spiny desert underbrush and wades through rocky riverbeds. The rubber toe bumper is also beefy, shrugging off impacts to the front of the foot.

The Whisper is a less burly rendition of the KEEN Newport H2, including a more streamlined outsole that we don’t expect to last as long. We have also read reports of the Whisper’s outsole peeling away from the rest of the shoe. If you’re concerned about longevity, sticking to mellower terrain should extend the sandals’ lifespan significantly.

Weight & Packability

Weighing 1 pound, 3.8 ounces per pair, the Whisper is in the middle of the pack in terms of heft. We didn’t notice the sandals on our feet – they never slowed us down or caused fatigue. Given the level of coverage and protection, we feel the weight is entirely reasonable.

Fans of the KEEN Newport H2 might be drawn to the Whisper for its lighter weight. Checking in a couple ounces less than the Newport, the Whisper is a slightly sleeker and more streamlined take. It’s not a huge difference, but weight certainly adds up over extended miles.

When it comes to packing the sandals, their shape is the most inconvenient aspect. The pseudo-sneaker build doesn’t squish down easily, and the sandals have a larger profile in general. The bulkier upper takes up a good amount of space and makes it more challenging to stash the Whisper in a full pack or duffel.

Ease of Use

The KEEN Whisper is foolproof when it comes to adjustments. An elastic bungee runs the length of the sandal and is easy to adjust via a toggle. The Whisper slides on quickly and can be snugged down in a single, quick movement. Once set, the bungee lace stayed securely in place.

This single adjustment point keeps things simple but doesn’t allow for a particularly fine-tuned fit. Thankfully, the closed-toe design keeps the foot in place, and flexibility in the webbing allows for some give to accommodate different foot shapes.

We did find it somewhat trickier to take the Whispers on and off when wet. The extra upper material causes the sandal to stick to the foot more than sandals consisting of just a sole and straps.

Should You Buy the KEEN Whisper?

The KEEN Whisper is a top choice for adventures that take you on or through water. The textured outsole provides stable footing in slippery conditions, and the full-coverage upper and closed-toe design offer great all-around protection.

The Whisper works best for narrow feet due to its smaller toe box and slimmer profile. It’s also more specialized than many of the other hiking sandals in our gear guide, mostly due to the outsole that lacks actual lugs. If you do a lot of hiking on steep slopes or tricky surfaces like gravel, there are better options available. However, for mellower outdoor endeavors – especially those that involve water – the Whispers are an excellent option.

What Other Women’s Hiking Sandals Should You Consider?

To see how the Whisper compares to our other favorites, check out our guide to the best women’s hiking sandals. Here are a few options to consider:

KEEN Newport H2 Review: Very similar in design to the Whisper, the Newport is a slightly burlier option. With a thicker, less ventilated upper, the Newport is even sturdier and better suited for rough terrain. It has actual lugs for improved grip on steep slopes and tricky surfaces like gravel, though it’s heavier than the Whisper.

Teva Hurricane XLT2 Review: The Hurricane’s contoured footbed offers a similarly sneaker-like feel. Compared to the Whispers, the Tevas have better all-around grip, allow for a more customized fit, and offer better breathability – at the sacrifice of protection.

Chaco Z/1 Classic Review: Another sturdy choice for water-based activities, the Chaco Z/1 is a durable open-toed option that’s stable and supportive. Featuring a comfortably contoured footbed, the Z/1 provides cushioned structure that’s built to withstand rugged use.
