Bottom Line

The Topo Athletic Terraventure has been our go-to trail shoe for years and has long been on our guide to the best women’s trail runners, thanks to its great price, impressive traction, ideal fit, and grippy outsole. The updated Terraventure 5 continues to meet our expectations while improving durability and keeping the shoes lightweight.

We were pleased to find that the basic design remains familiar, featuring an anatomical toe box that accommodates toe splay and wider feet, alongside a secure midfoot and heel. The latest version runs slightly narrower. Our testers were disappointed to find that the 5 now pinches at the widest point of the foot and that the arch support seemed a bit too far forward, which felt uncomfortable when we first hit the trail.

Fortunately, the arch issue became less noticeable over time, although the tightness persisted and caused significant foot pain on long days. The firm cushioning typical of Topo might take some getting used to for those who normally wear a squishier shoe.

How We Tested

We took the Topo Athletic Terraventure 5 on runs across the mid-Atlantic and in rural Michigan. We also took them on long, all-day hikes on the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee and North Carolina as trainers for a longer section that we completed in Virginia. We tested them in weather ranging from the low 50s to the upper 80s and from dry to humid to rainy.

Most of our daily runs in the Midwest were on rural dirt roads. In the mid-Atlantic region, we ran on gravel paths and on dirt singletrack. The Appalachian Trail sections were a mix of compacted dirt, rocky terrain, pine forest, and muddy slopes. Our testers are seasoned backpackers, long-distance runners, and mountaineers who enjoy time outside as much as possible and know the value of having a reliable pair of shoes on their feet.

Traction

Topo Athletic Terraventure 5s offer top-notch traction. The Vibram Megagrip outsole and deep lugs provided a no-slip grip in deep mud and on wet surfaces while we trained on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina and Tennessee. They were equally grippy and well-suited to dry terrain on compact singletrack. We appreciate their stickiness when on rocky terrain and in wet weather, keeping us on our feet when things get slick.

We also find that they transition admirably to less technical terrain, such as gravel paths and dirt roads, where the aggressive lugs provide solid grip without hindering our pace.

Our testers are impressed yet again by the performance of the Terraventure and pleased that this version maintains the same level of superior traction we’ve come to expect from this shoe.

Comfort

The Terraventure 5, like its predecessors, is not the most comfortable fit out of the box, especially if you’re used to softer or more forgiving uppers. However, we are big fans of the firmer, long-lasting foam, which offers the perfect balance of ground feel and cushion. The flexible ESS rockplate is indispensable on rocky sections of trail where we otherwise end up bruised from the sharp edges. We noticed that the arch support seems slightly too far forward and felt uncomfortable on our first few runs until we got used to it.

The Topo standard wide toe box remains in the 5, however, our testers did notice a significantly snugger fit to the midfoot exacerbated by changes in the lace placement. On very long days, our feet were aching from the pressure. This was not an issue in previous models, and we hope that it will be corrected in any subsequent versions of the Terraventure.

Weight

The Terraventure 5 is one of the lightest pairs of shoes we’ve tested and feels much lighter than previous models. This weight savings was definitely a boon on longer days on trail and when carrying a pack since it helped reduce overall load and fatigue. If you’re looking to shave some ounces off your shoes, these might be a good choice.

Durability

The Topo Athletic Terraventure series has always been incredibly durable and one of our top performers in the category. The Terraventure 5 is no different. Despite logging hard miles in a variety of conditions from wet and muddy to dry and rocky on mountainous terrain, our testers have yet to truly wear these shoes out.

The uppers are built from incredibly burly, tear- and abrasion-resistant fabrics. Despite catching them on trail debris and navigating narrow footing, we note no visible damage. The incredibly tough outsoles hold up to even the most rock-strewn trails without showing any real wear.

We also found that the outsoles are holding up extremely well. Even after significant rock underfoot, the lugs don’t seem to be wearing down. The foam midsole is resilient under stress and, even after two months of testing, shows only average signs of compression. Given their budget-friendly price point and overall durability, the Terraventure 5s are definitely a high-value trail-running shoe.

Breathability

The Topo Athletic Terraventure 5 is a highly breathable trail runner, thanks to a highly perforated mesh upper. Combined with lightweight fabrics and padding, the shoe wicks moisture effectively and keeps our feet comfortable on hot, humid days in the mid-Atlantic. Our testers noted that the shoes also dried quickly after a day in the rain and fords on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina.

Regarding moisture management inside the shoe, the jury is still out on the FKT insole. This closed-cell beaded foam insert is designed to be non-absorbent, allowing shoes to drain quickly in wet conditions. While we did find that having an insole that doesn’t soak up water helped speed up the shoe’s drying, we have a few qualms.

Our main one is that since the insole doesn’t absorb moisture, sweat gets trapped between the foot and the insole. Since it isn’t being actively carried away from the foot by the insole materials, it can get a bit swampy. While it didn’t happen for us, it could lead to hot spots or chafing on the bottoms of the feet for some runners. Additionally, the bumps on the insole are a little odd and could lead to chafing/hot spots, especially when feet are wet.

Responsiveness

The moderate cushioning of the Terraventure 5 strikes the perfect balance between comfort and connection. Just as in previous models, the flexible forefoot rockplate keeps our feet feeling protected on rough terrain, including rocky bits on the Appalachian Trail and on trail runs in the mid-Atlantic. Even with the cushion and rock plate, we don’t feel disconnected from the trail itself.

Our testers also find the Terraventure 5 incredibly flexible, which makes it ideal for tricky terrain where we need to be nimble. The 22-25 mm stack height is our sweet spot for providing a nice amount of rebound with every step without losing our sense of what’s underfoot. The minimal drop of just 3 mm is just enough to keep us feeling natural in our stride without straining our Achilles. This is a winning combination that Topo Athletic definitely gets right, and we hope they never change it. Overall, these are a fairly responsive, agile ride even on technical terrain.

Should You Buy the Topo Women’s Terraventure 5?

The Topo Athletic Terraventure has been our trusted trail shoe for several years on a variety of terrain and adventures. Its affordable pricing, outstanding traction, and durable upper make it a perfect choice for runners who are tough on their gear. It’s also a nice option for those looking to explore lower-drop trail runners without going all the way to full zero-drop footwear. Or it might be the Goldilocks pair for those who have had issues with zero-drop but still prefer a fairly minimal heel-to-toe stack-height difference.

However, runners with wider feet and/or those looking for a higher-volume midfoot should look elsewhere, since this model has made alterations that are detrimental to its fit for that demographic. For everyone else, the Terraventure 5 is a solid choice that balances cushioning, durability, ground feel, breathability, and budget pricing in one tough trail-runner package.
