Fit & Comfort
The OneTigris Hoppy Camper 2.0 is very secure, but its adjustability is limited. What is adjustable is a two-strap system under the belly. There’s also additional padding for comfort. However, the fixed chest strap limits the customizability of the fit.
The straps’ padding reduces pressure points and prevents chafing, which we appreciate on longer hikes and walks. During testing, the pack remained securely in place on flat terrain. We notice it shifts on steeper trails or when it is loaded. While the fit was generally secure, dogs with deep chests or shorter torsos may experience some looseness due to the limited adjustability.
Weight Distribution & Capacity
The Hoppy Camper distributes weight well, but its heavier build and smaller capacity make it less ideal for multi-day hikes. The two main compartments sit close to the body, balancing the load and reducing strain on the dog’s back. When packed with equal weight on both sides, the pack remains stable even during light jogging and moderate climbs.
Capacity-wise, the pockets are just big enough for day-hike essentials, but they aren’t expandable. The Velcro side pockets lack security, making them unreliable for small, loose items.
Durability
This pack is built to last, thanks to its heavy-duty cotton canvas construction. Just holding it, you will be like, “woof.”
The fabric resisted tearing throughout testing, even when brushed against dense vegetation and rocky surfaces. The reinforced stitching and Duraflex plastic buckles add to its longevity by improving the structural integrity of the pack as a whole.
Dragging the pack across rocks and branches resulted in minimal scuffing, and hand-washing removed dirt without damaging the material. However, the pack lacks water resistance, meaning that exposure to rain or wet conditions could lead to moisture retention and potential mildew, not to mention making the pack much heavier for the dog. Despite this, the build quality makes the Hoppy Camper one of the more durable dog packs we’ve tested in its price range.
Ease of Use
Putting on and adjusting the Hoppy Camper is so straightforward that our dogs could do it if they had opposable thumbs. One bummer is that the lack of extra adjustability options could pose a challenge for some dog breeds.
Otherwise, the two-strap system is intuitive, allows quick fitting, and the buckles are easily secured. Again, the fixed chest strap limits the ability to fine-tune the fit for specific body shapes.
Storage accessibility is a strong point, with two zippered compartments featuring pull tabs and external Velcro pockets for quick access. The lack of internal organization within the main compartments may make it harder to keep items in place during hikes if you don’t bring stuff sacks. Even still, with such a small capacity and outer pockets, we didn’t find that to be an issue.
Safety Features
While secure and durable, the Hoppy Camper lacks standard safety features like reflective trim. You can improve nighttime visibility by attaching a separate reflective patch or light.
The top handle is sturdy, provides a reliable grip for guiding the dog over obstacles, and is very well-padded to make it comfortable to hold. The two stainless steel D-ring leash attachment points are well-stitched and can withstand sudden pulls. Even our largest test dog (90 lbs) pulls on the end of the leash, and there’s still no damage to the stitching.
Weather Resistance
The Hoppy Camper does not offer much in the way of weather resistance. In wet conditions, the cotton canvas material absorbs moisture rather than repelling it, making the pack heavier and leading to discomfort for the dog. During testing, light rain dampened the compartments and increased rubbing against the dog when the pack shifted.
The breathable mesh lining on hot days helped reduce heat retention, but the heavier fabric contributed to heat retention. This pack best suits moderate weather conditions rather than extreme heat or rain.
